(Un)Bound New York

13 – 24 September 2017

The exhibition “(Un)Bound” was organized together with Photoville New York and took place in New York Brooklyn Bridge Park from 13th to 24th September 2017. It presented the work of four visual artists based in Rotterdam (The Netherlands) exploring the many written and unwritten rules defining boundaries and how they relate to our sense of freedom and belonging. The complementary, contradicting and sometimes even unusual visual strategies of the presented artists are linked by the exploration of the (photographic) landscape and migration, expressing the cultural interpretation and associations related to it.

Photoville is a New York-based non-profit organization that works to promote a wider understanding and increased access to the art of photography for all.

PCP | PERTH CENTRE FOR PHOTOGRAPHY

Group Exhibition, Transitions.

6 – 27 November 2021

The Perth Centre for Photography and Rotterdam Photo is pleased to present TRANSITIONS, a collaborative international group exhibition featuring work from the Rotterdam Photo Festival (Luuk Smits, Otto Snoek, Perrine Philomeen), First Nations artists from the Exposure Collective, and Perth artist May Bluebell.

Transition through concepts of the 21st century, where regression and progression come to a head. Transition through the resilience of First Nations Australians, countering historical misrepresentation and reclaiming their narrative through photographic practice. Transition through notions of time and geographical significance, with an exploration of space, place, and memory.

Rotterdam Photo’s theme of the year for 2020 was TRANSITIONS. The world has reached a historical turning point: see the rise of populism, Brexit, the Trump era and all the (humanitarian) crises that have emerged from that. The near future is uncertain. These crises, or better: transitions, will form the red line of Rotterdam Photo in 2020. Transitions as processes or periods of change from one condition to the next, call out to reflect. In our society, we see transitions of all sorts, gender transitions to energy transitions.

The Perth Center for Photography was established in 1992 as the Photography Gallery of WA. They offer an environment that promotes an understanding and appreciation of contemporary photographic practices. PCP has developed a range of initiatives, including competitive awards, and a broad and engaging education and outreach program aimed at supporting photographers who wish to expand their practice.

The urban between reality and utopia / open call

The urban between reality and utopia

The Tiradentes Photo Festival, in partnership with the Rotterdam Photo Festival.

The Tiradentes Photo Festival, in partnership with the Rotterdam Photo Festival, and with the support of the Netherlands consulate-general in São Paulo/Brazil, launched an open call that invites photographers to reflect on the theme: The urban between reality and utopia. This open call seeks to bring together photography works from the most diverse perspectives (documentary, personal and poetic images).

The images will be published on the social networks of both festivals (Instagram, Twitter and Facebook) and, at the end of the call, a selection of the projects submitted will be exhibited in a night projection during the Tiradentes and Rotterdam festivals. In addition, we will hold three webinars with experts reflecting on the theme of the urban.

The roots of power

Exhibition in collaboration with the Covid Photo Museum.

18 – 22 May 2022.

Rotterdam Photo 2022 in collaboration with The Covid Photo Museum

This year, replying to the current COVID-19 crisis, the Rotterdam Photo is happy to announce the collaboration with The Covid Photo Museum, the world’s first virtual museum dedicated to the curation of photography captured during the COVID-19 pandemic. A photograph has a unique ability to capture moods, emotions, narratives, ideas, and different types of messages.

The result of our collaboration will be the exhibition during the Rotterdam Photo 2022 XL, as well as some short documentaries (‘Deep stories’), created together with photographers from different parts of the globe.

This collaboration aims to unite some personal stories, some events documentation, the courage of people on the frontline, desperation, fear, and uncertainty of people who faced the pandemic. It shows the importance of human connections, the universality of our feelings and nature we all share nowadays no matter where we live. The invisible threat crossed thousands of personal borders, splitting millions of families over the world. The limited human interaction on every level forces you to appreciate even more what we have, share the moments of joy, peacefulness, and hope with our beloved.
