Befangen – The Illusion of Freedom
“One cannot be free if he does not know that he is subject to necessity, because his freedom is always won in his never wholly successful attempts to liberate himself from necessity.” – Hannah Arendt
Whoever is cannot be free. This thesis is at the centre of Trabandt‘s photographic analysis. For Befangen the photographer focuses on the healthy, privileged and supposedly free individuals like herself to trace the illusion of freedom in freedom. To her it seems that the more an individual strives for freedom, the more aware they become of their limitations.
Sonja Trabandt works as a photographer, designer and artist in Berlin. In her artistic work, Trabandt examines various emotional states and the environment that gives rise to them. Especially in her photo books but also in her exhibited installations she seeks the connection between documentary and conceptual photography and the different perception of ‘reality‘ through visual media.
