What does the metaworld promise us as a space of freedom? Will we be able to build a space of freedom here that we cannot find in real life? Or will this new world only offer us an imitation? Artificial modelling in games provides many insights into culture and society. Gaming photography offers us a new field in photography as a way of understanding this. Social life continues here as in real life and should be studied in the context of visual sociology, anthropology and documentary photography.
‘The Americans’ explores what it means to be an American in the metaworld, referencing Robert Frank’s ‘The Americans’. Black people, gay people, the homeless, nomads, white collars, flags, workers all visualise what it means to be an American in the metaworld. A space of liberation or an illusion of freedom?
